Cesspit installation

Before installing a cesspit, you will likely need to obtain planning permission and conduct a site assessment to ensure the proposed location is suitable. If you need help with either, give us a call.

The process for installing a cesspit can vary depending on your desired location and proximity to your building, but will usually follow a process similar to:

  1. An area will be excavated large enough for the tank
  2. The tank will be placed securely at a level, ensuring it is anchored in position
  3. Inlet pipes from your property will be connected, and the ventilation added
  4. Backfill the area with gravel or sand, leaving an access shaft to inspect, clean and empty the septic tank

Looking after your cesspit

They might not be the most glamorous, but cesspits play an important role in the sewage and drainage systems for many houses and buildings not connected to the mains sewage.

To look after your cesspit, ensuring longevity and efficiency, make sure to stick to regular cleaning and emptying. As cesspits do not process or treat the waste that enters them, they rely entirely upon regular emptying to stay functional. Without proper emptying and maintenance, they could lead to overflows that are environmental hazards and risk fines for non-compliance with the Environment Agency’s General Binding Rules.

Cesspit emptying

When it comes to emptying cesspits, the primary objective is to get rid of the liquid and solid waste collected in the pit. Unlike septic tanks or sewage treatment plants, the waste just collects in a cesspit and does not get treated and enter the local soil / waterstream. Therefore, cesspits must be regularly emptied out to ensure that they do not overflow.

The frequency that you need to empty your cesspit will depend upon the size and usage of the tank.

Peachy Services offer a professional cesspit emptying service, using one of our vacuum tankers to remove all of the contents before disposing of it safely. We’re well-versed in the difficulties of accessing some cesspits, so don’t worry if yours is off the beaten track somewhat, we’ll be ready.

Cleaning your cesspit

A very important, if often overlooked part of cesspit ownership is the cleaning. Cleaning your cesspit will remove the residue, sludge and grease that can buildup in the pipes and tank, potentially clogging the inlet pipe. Whilst cleaning your cesspit can be done less regularly than they need to be emptied, it should still be performed regularly to ensure that no buildup occurs that can cause an odour, overflow or blockages.

Maintenance

Regular inspections and proactive maintenance can help to prolong the operational life of your cesspit. Cleaning out the filters and ventilation pipes can protect against gas buildup.

Cesspit Repairs

A common issue with cesspits, especially older ones, is the tank or inlet pipes beginning to crack or leak, which can cause contamination of the local soil. Blocked inlet pipes are another common issue with cesspits.

Here at Peachy Services, we can help to repair, maintain, upgrade or replace your cesspit should you be facing issues.
